2016 8th Grade Exam Osa The Amazing World of Ecosystems A Closer Look at Lifes Interconnections Have you ever stopped to think about the incredible variety of life on Earth From the smallest insect to the tallest tree every living thing plays a vital role in a complex web of relationships called an ecosystem What is an Ecosystem Imagine a bustling city People work play and interact each contributing to the overall functioning of the city An ecosystem is similar Its a community of living organisms plants animals fungi bacteria interacting with their nonliving environment air water soil sunlight Each part of the ecosystem depends on the others for survival Components of an Ecosystem Biotic Factors All the living things in an ecosystem like plants animals bacteria and fungi Abiotic Factors The nonliving components of the ecosystem like sunlight water temperature soil and air Types of Ecosystems Terrestrial Ecosystems Landbased ecosystems like forests grasslands deserts and tundra Aquatic Ecosystems Waterbased ecosystems like oceans lakes rivers and wetlands Key Interactions in Ecosystems Food Webs A complex network of interconnected food chains Each level in the food web depends on the level below for food PredatorPrey Relationships A relationship where one organism the predator hunts and eats another the prey This helps regulate population sizes Competition When organisms compete for limited resources like food water or space Symbiosis A close and longterm relationship between two different species like mutualism both benefit commensalism one benefits the other is unaffected or parasitism one benefits the other is harmed 2 The Importance of Ecosystems Provide us with essential resources Air water food medicine and building materials Regulate the Earths climate Forests absorb carbon dioxide while oceans help regulate temperature Support biodiversity A variety of living things makes the ecosystem more resilient and adaptable to change Contribute to our wellbeing Being in nature can reduce stress and improve mental health Threats to Ecosystems Habitat Loss Destruction of natural habitats for agriculture development and other human activities Pollution Contamination of air water and soil by human activities Climate Change Global warming leading to extreme weather events rising sea levels and altered ecosystems Overexploitation Excessive use of resources like fishing logging and hunting Protecting Ecosystems Reduce reuse recycle Conserve resources and minimize waste Support sustainable practices Choose products that are produced responsibly and ethically Conserve energy and water Reduce our reliance on fossil fuels and save water resources Educate yourself and others Learn about the importance of ecosystems and advocate for their protection You Can Make a Difference By understanding the intricate workings of ecosystems and the interconnectedness of life we can make informed choices that protect our planet and its amazing diversity Remember we all share this Earth and its our responsibility to care for it
