English Language Paper 1 Mock Test 4 English Language Paper 1 Mock Test 4 This mock test is designed to mirror the structure of the actual English Language Paper 1 which assesses students abilities in reading and writing nonfiction texts The test will consist of two sections Section A Reading 50 marks Reading Section 60 minutes including reading time Extract 1 15 marks This section will focus on a nonfiction text such as a newspaper article blog post or website extract Students will be required to answer a series of questions that explore the texts content language and writers purpose Type of Questions Literal comprehension Questions that require students to recall factual information from the text Inference Questions that require students to draw conclusions from the text based on evidence provided Language analysis Questions that explore the writers use of language and its effect on the reader Structure and organization Questions that analyze the structure of the text and how the writer has used it to achieve their purpose Extract 2 20 marks This section will involve two shorter nonfiction texts that are linked thematically Students will be asked to compare and contrast the texts in terms of content language and writers purpose Type of Questions Comparison and contrast Questions that require students to identify similarities and differences between the texts Analysis of both texts Questions that explore the use of language and structure in both texts Evaluation Questions that ask students to make judgments about the effectiveness of both texts Extract 3 15 marks This section will consist of a longer nonfiction text such as a magazine article or speech Students will be required to write a response that explores the writers ideas and arguments and how they are presented 2 Type of Questions Summary and analysis Questions that require students to summarize the main ideas of the text and analyze how the writer has developed their argument Evaluation Questions that ask students to evaluate the strength and effectiveness of the writers arguments Personal response Questions that invite students to consider their own opinions and beliefs in relation to the text Section B Writing 50 marks Writing Section 1 hour 15 minutes Question 1 30 marks This question will present a writing task that requires students to write a nonfiction text such as a letter article speech or report The question will provide a context and a specific purpose for the writing task Type of Tasks Persuasive writing Writing that aims to convince the reader to agree with a particular point of view Informative writing Writing that aims to present information clearly and objectively Narrative writing Writing that tells a story Assessment criteria Content and ideas The relevance and clarity of the ideas presented Structure and organization The logical flow and coherence of the writing Language and style The appropriateness and effectiveness of the language used Question 2 20 marks This question will present a choice of writing tasks allowing students to select the one they feel most confident in The tasks will vary in style and purpose but will all be based on nonfiction texts Type of Tasks Creative writing Writing that uses imagination to create a fictional story or piece of writing Descriptive writing Writing that uses vivid language to paint a picture in the readers mind Reflective writing Writing that explores personal thoughts and feelings Assessment criteria Content and ideas The originality and quality of the ideas presented Structure and organization The clarity and flow of the writing Language and style The appropriateness and effectiveness of the language used Key Focus Areas Reading comprehension Students should be able to understand the main ideas and 3 arguments of nonfiction texts and identify key information Language analysis Students should be able to analyze the writers use of language and explain how it contributes to the overall effect of the text Structure and organization Students should be able to identify the different parts of a non fiction text and understand how they work together to create meaning Writing skills Students should be able to write clear concise and effective nonfiction texts for different purposes and audiences Critical thinking and evaluation Students should be able to critically evaluate the ideas and arguments presented in nonfiction texts and form their own opinions Tips for Success Read carefully and actively Underline key information note important points and make connections between different parts of the text Analyze the language Pay attention to the writers choice of words sentence structure and tone How do these choices affect the meaning and effect of the text Consider the writers purpose Why has the writer written this text What are they trying to achieve Plan your writing Before you start writing take time to brainstorm ideas organize your thoughts and plan the structure of your piece Use evidence Support your claims with evidence from the text and use appropriate language and vocabulary Proofread carefully Check for any errors in
